THE MISSION: To feed and inspire the world – one can at a time.
Canstruction® is a unique charity which hosts competitions, exhibitions and events showcasing colossal structures made out of full cans of food. After the structures are built, the cansculptures® go on display to the public as a giant art exhibition. At the end of the event, all food is donated to local hunger relief organizations.
The City of Hamilton's mission is to be the best place to raise a child. We believe in our community and we are reaching out to the greater community to band together and to participate in the event; to reduce hunger, one CAN at a time. In other cities, canstruction events are the largest one time contributors to local food banks.
THE EVENT
Canstruction Hamilton's inaugural event will be held on October 9, 2015 along James Street North. It will be a one-day collaborative and interactive event where individuals gather together to design and build can structures over the course of one day. Individuals will be sorted into teams upon arrival. Teams each receive the same "kit of parts" - a pallet of identical canned goods - and will work together to come up with a design for their structure. They will then have the rest of the day to build their can structure.
WHERE:
Meet at Spice Factory
121 Hughson Street North, 2nd Floor
WHEN:
4pm SHARP! Friday, October 9th
SCHEDULE:
4–4:30pm – participant arrival and team assembly; instructions
4:30–5pm - teams work together and discuss ideas about their build
5pm – teams go to their build site (builds will be at: Spice Factory, AGH Annex, and Evergreen / Cobalt Connects Hub)
5–10pm – teams design and build their structure
Once the can structures have been completed, we will tour all the structures along James North during October's Art Crawl, followed by a celebration of our efforts at Spice Factory.
Structures will be left up for viewing by the community during Art Crawl and for the entire weekend. After this time, structures will be de-canstructed and food will be donated to Hamilton Food Share.
